Johannesburg is one of Africa’s biggest and most vibrant cities. It is the economic capital of Africa and the gateway to Southern Africa. The old city is a multi-cultural mixture of ultra-modern skyscrapers, excellent museums, art galleries and organized tours of historical and political interest. The shopping is Southern Africa’s best and the the nearby township of Soweto is Johannesburg’s most popular tourist attraction.

Note from Bert:
Is there an antidote for jet lag? Not really. It mostly just takes a bit of time, staying awake when it is light out, and sleeping at night. Which is sometimes easier said than done. High on my private list of remedies for shaking off the bleary-eyed, out-of-body feeling which I associate with an east-bound trans-Atlantic flight, is a good hotel room. Particularly for the first night in the new time-zone.
The Intercontinental at Oliver R. Tambo Airport hits all the right notes for the over-tired international traveler. It is a short stroll from the arrivals hall, it has good security (need room key to access any specific floor), a shower and bath with plenty of hot water, good sound insulation and super-dark room interiors. Plus a 24-hour restaurant just in case you wake up at an odd hour, with the munchies.
Considering the high daily tariff for the room, the ‘standard’ deluxe rooms at the Intercontinental are on the small side. However what you are paying for here is mostly location and unquestionably it is ideal. The hotel is almost ridiculously close to the international arrivals hall. Even so, the rooms are practically 100% soundproof and even during the very busy early morning take-off frenzy, you won't hear aircraft taking off. The room has a good size bath and there is a very amply proportioned shower as well, and a separate toilet with door. The room had a good quality TV, handy plug points, plenty of space for clothes & other stuff. Also the bed was super comfortable with nice, soft pillows . An espresso coffee maker and adequately stocked mini-bar are available for guests needing a refreshment.
I have nothing negative to say about the Intercontinental; perhaps it would be a good idea to have a light switch for the bathroom inside the room, rather than on the bedroom side of the sliding door. At night it makes for a few awkward moments as the ‘awake’ person tries to sneak into the bathroom and has to switch on the bright bathroom light in view of the ‘asleep’ person.
The Intercontinental is of course also the safest option of any Johannesburg hotel. There is just about zero exposure to any kind of danger or potential danger. You walk (escorted at night) across an interior airport road, look up to your right and there it is, a few meters to the right.

Note from Bert :
We fell in love with this beautiful, friendly place and its people on a recent visit and urge everyone we see to include it in their next Botswana trip. Very close to Abu in the western part of the Okavango Delta, Seba is a reliable summer camp for game-viewing and there's access to water for mokoro outings and boating + fishing even when the water in the Delta is at its lowest point. The rooms are exceptionally good and we enjoyed the guiding and the overall experience at Seba as much as any camp we've ever visited in Botswana. Seba has very few other vehicles around with just one other camp in the area. The habitat is typical Okavango Delta mosaic and it is very picturesque.

Note from Bert :
Chitabe and its sister property Chitabe Lediba are 'land only' camps adjacent to the Moremi Game Reserve in the south-eastern part of the Okavango Delta, in an area of mixed woodland interspersed with patches of floodplain and waterways. All rooms and main areas are connected along an elevated boardwalk. I found the rooms to be comfortable and well-equipped with good lighting, ample charging sockets and plenty of space.
In terms of game-viewing. Chitabe has turned into another Mombo. Before leaving the camp on a recent visit, the guide and I had to chase giraffe, zebra, impala and warthog off the airstrip, so that our imminently arriving plane could land safely. And all through this there was a pack of twenty Painted Dogs sleeping in a shady spot not 10 meters off the runway. Bonus sighting for the incoming visitors.
